Seriously, though, Mark did go to the 8th grade planning meeting, where a number of moms (he was the only dad) raised the same concerns. Turns out the information that we (and other families) had heard was older, and that things were much different. Several of the moms also shied away from the word "formal" as well, feeling it was inappropriate for this age. The general agreement was that it was a "bash" or a "celebration", that it would be at a hotel in our area, and that it would be themed--Hawaiian, etc. and not a structured dance-type thing. Mark said the principal is quite sensible and is steering the process to a place that is age-appropriate, all-inclusive (last year only 3 kids didn't come), and fun.
Whew--moral crisis averted!
